Choose around the way you will travel

For a seven-day visit, start with three questions: can each phone use the product, will your group stay together, and can you collect and return any rented equipment at the required time? A low advertised price is not useful if one of those conditions fails.

An eSIM is worth investigating when your phone is compatible and unlocked, and you want each traveller to have their own connection. A physical travel SIM is an alternative to investigate when an eSIM is unsuitable, but the exact SIM, phone and network requirements still need checking. Pocket Wi-Fi is another option for a group willing to carry, charge and manage a shared device. These are selection scenarios, not a performance ranking.

For an eSIM, check the seven-day window carefully

Check the exact model and carrier-lock status of every phone that will use an eSIM. Airalo's compatibility guidance requires both eSIM support and no carrier restriction. For whichever provider you choose, inspect the selected Japan plan's activation trigger and validity rules before installing it.

Compare your arrival and departure times with the plan's stated validity. Confirm the allowance, any hotspot or fair-use restrictions, whether calls or SMS are included, and what happens when the allowance runs out. A plan marketed for a week still needs to fit your actual usage window.

For a physical SIM, include delivery or collection in the decision

Use the specific product instructions to confirm that your phone is unlocked and compatible. SimOptions' physical-SIM FAQ tells customers to check the chosen product description for detailed requirements. Do not transfer an eSIM compatibility conclusion to a physical SIM, or vice versa.

Check how and when the SIM reaches you, whether collection is available for that item, and whether the delivery or collection schedule fits your flight. If you need to keep your usual number active, check your phone's SIM configuration and your home carrier's requirements before removing or disabling anything.

For pocket Wi-Fi, plan the handover as carefully as the data

Ninja WiFi publishes airport-specific collection deadlines and counter hours. Check the airport, terminal, arrival time and return location for your own booking. The official airport page warns that equipment must be returned before passing departure immigration; the return arrangements are therefore part of the product, not an afterthought.

Before booking a shared device, verify the permitted connections, data policy, charging needs, included accessories and loss or late-return terms. If your group will split up, decide how each subgroup will stay connected. Do not assume that a shared router continues to serve a traveller who has taken a separate route.

Make one comparison sheet before choosing

Compare only options that passed the device and itinerary checks. For each, record the final amount payable, coverage, allowance, calls or SMS, hotspot rules, activation timing, collection or delivery, and cancellation terms. Add the time and effort involved in setup or returning a rental.
